Yard sales this past weekend were great!

We went by an estate sale at 8:40, and no one was there. So we went back an hour later and the place was packed. It was obvious two different people priced everything. Anything was masking tape price tags was way overpriced, even for an estate sale. Anything with florescent yard sale stickers was priced right. I found a couple of things, and fortunately for me the lady who was using stickers was the one taking payments on the way out, so she gave us an even better deal. :)

It was a great day for fabric and vintage sheets!! I got more fabric for my Christmas projects, and more vintage sheets for my collection. I got a table (the white one) to replace Steve's nightstand. The one he's been using isn't even really a nightstand. So now we'll use it as a temporary table for his computer. I got the black table for $2!!! This isn't a great picture, but it looks really old. I really like the legs. The knobby part looks really ornate and such. I'll have to get a better picture. The top is can and not in the best shape, but I'd be afraid of messing it up if I tried to redo it. So it will do fine as is. I also got a metal card box to use for my recipes.

Here's the stash of fabric and vintage linens I picked up. I even found an old embroidery pattern.

Salt and pepper shakers

Our salt and pepper shakers belonged to Steve's great great grandmother, Izorah Smith. I don't know how old they are, but she died in 1961. After she passed away, they went to Grandma Moore. When she sold her house a couple of years ago, we got them. I can imagine all of the many meals these shakers have seasoned and the many family get togethers they have witnessed. We have a few antiques that we've gotten from Grandma Moore that have been in the family for many years. I love them:)

Grandma Moore's dress

When Steve's Grandma was selling her house and getting rid of things, one of the things she gave to us was an old black trunk that belonged to Steve's great uncle. Inside it were some baby clothes that were Grandma Moore's, Rebecca's great grandma.

Since Rebecca is not in her harness all day now, I put one of them on her yesterday, and I like the pictures. The dress was a pretty good fit, so it's a good thing I did this now instead of waiting much longer! It's still big enough that it was really easy to get on and off. It's showing it's age, so I wanted to be really careful. I love the hat!

4-25 Yard Sales

I got these old wooden spools at a rummage sale Saturday at the high school. I'm sure many people would look at these and think "Uh, why?". I love them, and everyone knows I like old stuff like that. Antiques are cool, okay.


They fit well on top of the armoire in the guest room. Steve's great great grandmother's armoire has at last found it's home upstairs. After my parents and Joy and John moved here, it finally got moved. I love this armoire! I know it's at least 75 years old, maybe older.


And I got this bench for our porch. I need to make a cushion for it. I know, another project to add to my list. :) Notice Toby in the picture. He followed me all weekend.


Joy and John and my parents all went to Memphis this weekend, so we were dog sitting this weekend. Puppies are high maintenance! (hence the newspaper on the floor in the above picture) But he's more cuddly than our cats and he likes to be held. Steve says we can't get a dog, but I really don't want one. I'll just have Toby come visit once in a while. He likes our cat food for some reason. I didn't starve him. I really did feed him his puppy food!

Antique finds from the weekend

Here's the two things I bought this weekend. I didn't get much. Just these two things, and some wood stacking boxes. There wasn't a lot of yard sales this weekend. But I'm happy with what I did find. I really like this quilt block pillow. It goes perfect with our back bedroom.


And I got this bench for a really good price. It's probably not very old, but I like it a lot. I've been looking for a bench for a while. I put it in our "grand hall" as I call it. (If you remember, I posted about a year ago that our hallway was a foot wider that it should be. I guess it's better than it being a foot narrower!)

I finished painting the old iron bed Saturday morning before I went to my yard sales. This is the bed that belonged to Aunt Hattie and was in Steve's grandma's garage for years. I got the rust off and painted it last week. Then I found this quilt and shams for $10 at a yard sale over the weekend, so it worked out great.

Some more pictures of our kitten. He seems to like his new home, and he and Nova love to play and wrestle. I think we've decided on a name for him, but I'll share that after our little poll goes away in a few days.

Piano

I'm a proud owner of an antique piano! Jimmy & Libby knew someone who needed to get rid of this 1918 piano. We picked it up last Tuesday, and brought it to our house. :)

Iron bed

This is the iron bed we got. It's been in Steve's grandma's garage for I don't know how long. It's a little rusty, but I think we can fix it up. I'm told it belonged to Steve's great great Aunt Hattie.

Armoire

This is the armoire that we were able to get from Steve's grandma. I love it! It belonged to Steve's great great grandma, Julia Anne Gwaltney. Julia actually found Steve's grandma sleeping in it once when she was a little girl! :)

Yard sales

It was a great yard sale day Saturday. I got a Halloween swag for $2 (the leaves are not part of it, they're just on the table), and old quilt for $2, a little white bench for $2, and this old box for $5. I plan on painting the box and using it for a coffee table. The lid comes off of it, and we can use it for storage too.

Silver tea set

We got this silver tea set at Grandma's last week. No one wanted to have to polish it, so I took it. I've gotten the tea pot polished quite a bit, but it still needs more work. This silver polishing is tough! I got all of the silverware (from a previous post) polished though.

Some new old stuff. . .

. . .new to me anyway. Since Steve's grandma sold her house, we went over there last night to help go through things. I brought home an old quilt (which needs a little repair, but looks great), a box of silverware (which I think at least some of it is real silver), a sewing box, and some other things. As we were all leaving after dark, Egghead was by the driveway. It kind of made me sad. I think they've found someone who wants her and will take care of her. (For those of you who don't know, Egghead is the outside cat that came along a few years ago, and Steve's grandpa named her Egghead.) But just cleaning out the house and getting rid of things. Kind of sad. But we're getting a lot of nice things. I'm so grateful we can have a few family keepsakes. Steve has made more than one comment about the fact that we're building a new house, but I want to fill it with old things. Yes, I do. I like old things.

Vanity mirror

Steve was out late Friday night working on our house, so I knew he would want to sleep in Saturday. So I got to go to yard sales Saturday morning. This was the one I was most excited to find. I got this antique vanity mirror for $2. I just need to get a piece of glass cut for it. (Our curious kitty always wants to be in the middle of what's going on.) I also got a vintage wodden 7up box, and a big wide push broom, a hand sander for a quarter, a plastic drop cloth for a quarter. It was a pretty good day.

Old trunk

I got this a couple of weeks ago at a yard sale for $6! The lady said she paid $60 for it at an antique store!

But that's probably all the yard sales for me for a while. This weekend I had to go to a training thing for work, and now we need to be working on our house more.

Finally!

I've been looking for an old quilt, and finally found this one Saturday for $4! It has some spots on the bottom that need stitching up, but I love it! I think they're supposed to be flowers, but they look kind of like lips. :)

More antiques

Before we moved our furniture Saturday morning, I had time to go to a couple of yard sales. I found this antique silverware. I really didn't think much of it would match, but there's a whole set of 26 pieces, and 5 or 6 extra random spoons that don't match. I don't think any of it is silver, but I got it all polished, and they look great. :)

Candelabra

The before picture I posted wasn't very good, but here it is after I polished it. This is the sterling silver candelabra I got for $2 at a yard sale. I think it looks great. Who would have thought that black candlestick I got would turn out to be silver? :)

Yard sale finds

It was overcast and rainy Saturday, so I wasn't expecting to find much. But I was surprised! I got this sterling silver candlestick for $2. It was almost black when I got it, and it's polishing out very nicely. I got some stuff that was supposed to take the tarnish off, but my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser worked much better. Love those things! It still needs some more work. And I got this door for $2! It needs a lot of work! But I really like it. Hopefully with some sanding and a new coat of paint, it will look great in our basement.
