Vintage Sheets

I've been hunting for vintage sheets the last couple of months. I decided I want to make a quilt once I've collected enough different ones. Maybe a zig zag quilt like this one. I still need to find some more to have enough different patterns. The hunt is always fun. The sheet at the bottom and the pillowcase on top) that has red in it is the set I found at Goodwill last weekend. Love that one.

Yard Sales and thrifting

I found a few yard sales Saturday, and then I stopped by at the Goodwill store before going home. At Goodwill I found 4 hardback books from the 1960's, a milk glass lamp with a shade, and a full set of vintage sheets. I forgot to take a pictures of the sheets, but I really like them. Very pretty! I was saying last week that our Goodwill store wasn't very good, but this time I found some treasures. At yard sales I found a bunch of board books with flaps and peekaboo pages, (Rebecca loves those), a hamper, a some Veggie Tales videos. Rebecca doesn't watch tv, she's never been interested. But she does like music, so I thought I would try some sing along videos. Now our VCR isn't working. And I think I even sold one a while back at a yard sale! So that's something else to be on the lookout for.

11-6-2010 yard sales

Yard sales this past weekend were great!

We went by an estate sale at 8:40, and no one was there. So we went back an hour later and the place was packed. It was obvious two different people priced everything. Anything was masking tape price tags was way overpriced, even for an estate sale. Anything with florescent yard sale stickers was priced right. I found a couple of things, and fortunately for me the lady who was using stickers was the one taking payments on the way out, so she gave us an even better deal. :)

It was a great day for fabric and vintage sheets!! I got more fabric for my Christmas projects, and more vintage sheets for my collection. I got a table (the white one) to replace Steve's nightstand. The one he's been using isn't even really a nightstand. So now we'll use it as a temporary table for his computer. I got the black table for $2!!! This isn't a great picture, but it looks really old. I really like the legs. The knobby part looks really ornate and such. I'll have to get a better picture. The top is can and not in the best shape, but I'd be afraid of messing it up if I tried to redo it. So it will do fine as is. I also got a metal card box to use for my recipes.

Here's the stash of fabric and vintage linens I picked up. I even found an old embroidery pattern.

Yard Sales

This past weekend was a busy one, so I looked for yard sales Friday. I only found two, but I did pretty well. I got a lot of fabric scraps, some Little Swimmer diapers for next summer, a Strawberry Shortcake dvd, a couple of feed sacks for a future project, some clothes. Lots of good stuff. Hopefully this Friday will be better because I can't go again this Saturday.

Paper dolls

I found these paper doll images and thought maybe someone else can use them too. I can't find the site where I originally got them. These paper dolls are from about 1984. They're names are Penny and Jenny, if I remember right. I loved paper dolls growing up. I didn't have these, but I had lots of other paper dolls and a tooth fairy pillow with these dolls. Rebecca won't be ready for paper dolls for a while, but I hope someone can use these for a little girl who would like them. If you click on the images, you can save or print the larger images. Use cardstock, so they will hold up better. And go here and here for lots more printable paper dolls. Lots. My favorites are the Ginghams. They're just so adorable in their little frocks! They remind me of Holly Hobbie dolls. By the way, apparently Holly Hobbie was based on a real person. Anyhoot there's also Strawberry Shortcake dolls and lots of Betsy McCall. I was just thinking how paper dolls would be a great birthday party theme! Maybe one day. After this trip down memory lane, I feel like getting out the Spirograph or Lite Brite before I go to bed. :)

Strawberry Shortcake dress

I was looking through things for some pictures last week, and I came across this old dress. I'm sure my sister wore this, and I may have worn it. I had already decided I wanted to have a Strawberry Shortcake birthday party for Rebecca next summer. I like to plan ahead so I can bee looking at yard sales for thrifty decorations. This dress should fit her just about right.

Bargains Galore on 64

This weekend is the 11th year of Bargains Galore on 64. Joy and I decided to head toward Vilonia for a little while yesterday. The thought of so many bargains in one place was enough for me to make an exception to my no yard sales in August rule. I found two Pampered Chef stones (one new, one almost new), a couple of books, a pair of pants (for me), a window valence, a recipe box, a bunch of silverware and utensils, a box toy with shapes, some gourds, and my favorite find of the day, a pair of milk glass lamps. Joy is jealous of my Pampered Chef finds, since she walked right past them both and didn't even see them! Today I spent a total of $12.

I almost forgot about these gourds, my first purchase today. I like them all golden and autumny-looking, 50 cents each.

I love these hobnail milk glass lamps! I've wanted one since I saw one on The Lettered Cotttate blog. Mine work fine, but the glass globes aren't original to the lamps. But I loooove them! And they were only $4 for the set! What a deal!

This house recipe box is really country looking, so I'm going to paint it white and black. I think it would be a nice gift full of recipes, kind of like the one I made for my fabulous sister in-law Naomi. I'm still thinking about how exactly I want this one to look.

I'm liking the vintage-y feel of this window valence. It was .10 cents! Today I coffee dyed it and hung it in our kitchen window.


We remember why we don't like to yard sale in August. It's so hot! My grandmother, who still lives in South Florida doesn't mind going to yard sales when it's hot. But we sure do. Our finds from the weekend have gotten us excited to get back at it next month though!

I was planning on staying home this morning from the bargain hunting, but the cat woke me up at 6:00 this morning. I couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up and headed out the door at 6:40. I found a couple of things. I got some storage containers for my cleaning supplies, fleece jammies for Rebecca, white basket for toy storage, set of 3 rugs, vintage salt & pepper shakers, and a couple of other things. I bought these little salt and pepper shakers from a nice little lady. She gave me that red Christmas candle and told me to think of her this Christmas. She was so sweet. She told me she has a collection of over 2,000 salt and pepper shakers! That's a lot of salt and pepper!

I got back home this morning and Steve said he wanted us to all go back out together. That's when I found my two glass covers for .25 cents each to go on my lamps I bought yesterday.

I will definitely be ready to have a yard sale in October to make room for the new stuff we've gotten!

6-20-2010 yard sales

Here are the results of my findings this past weekend. I went alone this time, and found several things. I've been looking for a lamp shade for this antique lamp I posted about here. We re-wired the lamp a while back and have been using a tiny little shade until I found the right one at the right price. My patience paid off, and I got this one.


I also got a great lamp for $1.50 for our guest room. I got it at one of those sales I may not usually stop at. From the street it didn't look like they had much, and what they had didn't look great. But I'm definitely glad I did. I don't know how old it is, but it is heavy! I got a play broom for Jackson (that boy loves to sweep!) at a house where they were giving away bottles of cold water with any purchase. I told the man since I only spent .25 cents there, he didn't have to give me the water. But he insisted. Not a bad deal there! I got a picture frame, some books including a few cookbooks, a couple of winter outfits for Rebecca, some fall place card holders, and some toy tools for Jackson and Justin (more than what is in this picture) which I will probably save for them for Christmas. I spent a total of 10.75 this weekend. I think when my grandmother is in town this weekend, we'll go out again. But after that I'm going to take a break from yard sales for a couple of months. It's getting HOT around here, into the 100's now.

Yard Sales 6-5-10

Here are the results from our great day at yard sales this weekend. Grandmother and Emily were here visiting, but Emily opted to sleep in while Grandmother joined in on the excitement.
She and Joy found a few things. I found a lot:)


We got a play kitchen for Rebecca and Jackson. The kitchen and all of the food with it was $10!

Rebecca has a doll cradle and high chair I got for $1 each, which I will save for Christmas for her.

Rebecca got a couple of Christmas dresses for a quarter each. Other finds include: a rug ($1), baskets (.50 cents each), a pumpkin flag (.05 cents!) which was supposed to be Grandmother's but she let me have it, free magazines, a couple of stamps for a quarter, measuring cups. . . .

t-shirts, a plaid dress and a pair of tennis shoes for Rebecca that Naomi kept back for her, a Pampered Chef thing that I don't know what to call (.25 cents), a piece of blue strip fabric (.25 cents).

ETA: I checked, the Pampered Chef thing is a micro-cooker.

This mirror is one of my favorite things I found this week. I got it at Dave and Naomi's church rummage sale. I paid $5 for it. I don't usually spend that much on things like that, but I really love it! I still haven't done anything with the vanity mirror I had, so I think it works out. It looks great on my vanity (or what I call my vanity right now).

Yard Sales 5-22-10

I had a great day Saturday out yard saling. No rain, but it was hot! Some of the highlights were a vanity suitcase, $2 (I like to use old suitcases for storage), wooden box, can of wood stain, can of Kilz primer, greenery, a basket, flagpole with another scarecrow flag, (I'm collecting more flags for Memaw), a wreath, some books, some clothes for Rebecca (or to put on ebay) for .10 cents each, sheer curtain panels for .25 cents each (which I just put on ebay last night). I spent a total of $15.55, and I hope to make more than that from what I can sell on ebay. I'm so glad I didn't spend $20 on a new flagpole yet!

Yard Sales 4-8-2010

I don't know where to begin! It was an awesome day. The weather was the best, there were plenty of yard sales to "shop" at, and lots of deals to be had. I've changed our normal route around to include more of the city. Yard sales aren't around in Arkansas all year, so I think we should be making the most of it. So we did. Fortunately we decided to take Joy's truck. Joy got some toys for Justin and Jackson and a few other items. I got clothes for all three of us. Some for .10 cents each for Rebecca, including a warm soft, hooded sweater. Ten cents! Pants for Steve, shirts for me, mittens for Rebecca, a basket, picture frame, scrapbook paper, books, a humidifier, manger scene stable, hairbow holder thingy, dress up shoes, and an old rocking chair for $1! The seat of the rocker is torn up. But I think with a little work, it will definitely be worth it. And it's old. I love it. I didn't get around to taking a picture today, so maybe later.

If you haven't been going to yard sales, you should!!! This is the best time of year for yard sales! Go, go, go! Not today. Go to church today, but go to yard sales soon! :)

Yard sales 3-27-10

Yesterday was a great day for me at yard sales! Sorry the pictures are not great. I thought the camera was on automatic. I got a lot of stuff, but a few things were an over the door ironing board, an old crock, jacket for Rebecca for next winter, jammies and shoes for Rebecca, Old Navy sweater, blue mason jar, a 1930's bar of Proctor and Gamble soap, vintage crocheted pot holder, stock pot, birthday hat for Rebecca. What a great day!

Deck the Halls

I put up most of our Christmas decorations last weekend. Just a few more things left to do. These are all the mostly clear pictures I could get. Not very good, but at least they're not blurry. Mostly. Our new camera is on it's way!!

My great grandmother made this afghan. I love handmade things, especially family handmade things.

This was my grandmother's and she gave it to me a few years ago. The music box still plays too.


I love these vintage glass ornaments. I got them at a yard sale, and this is the first year I've used them. My great grandmother also made the beaded ornaments.

She made lots of bells, icicles, some stars and angels. But she only made one drum. Some of my favorite ornaments.

11-21-2009 yard sales

I did well at yard sales this weekend. I got five more lawn chairs. The wooden chairs are still good, but the two with the plaid seats have since broken. At least they were only .25 cents!

I got a Lil Critter book for a quarter, and two cross stitch books for .25 cents each, a set of sheets for $2, a lamp for $1, and a mirror for our bathroom for $3.

I still haven't gotten a new camera, so my pictures are still blurry. It's frustrating. I've been trying to sell some stuff on ebay, and it's so hard to get a good picture when the camera's auto focus seems to be going out. I've been getting less Rebecca pictures too, so a camera will have to be purchased soon!

And we have caught our mouse! My brother in law, John, put out a trap for me in one of the kitchen cabinets. It's been over a week since he did. Today I opened the cabinet door and saw a long black tail. Sorry mouse.

11-7-09 Yard Sales

Sorry again for the slightly blurry picture.

It was a great day for yard sales today! (1) Chair for $3. Our great grandmother use to have chairs just like these. (2) Salad spinner for $2 (3) two peekaboo board books , a quarter each. (4) Picture frame, quarter (5) Cosco Alpha Omega car seat for $10. It's a really nice car seat. (6) Bag full of clothes for Rebecca, including several shirts for .10 each, a sweater, a pair of shoes, and 5 or 6 two piece outfits. Total was $3.75 (6) some greenery, a quarter (7) Rocking riding elephant that plays music, $5. (8) And my favorite purchase for today, the treadmill. I bought one today for $5!!!! I've been looking for one, and finally got one today. It was so cheap because it doesn't have the safety key that stops the treadmill. I guess it won't work without one. So I think we found the right one on ebay, and my treadmill should be up and running soon! Joy got a Mr. Potato head, and a gas grill for free! The grill was free, not Mr. Potato Head. It's kind of rusty, but I think it will clean up well.

Salt and pepper shakers

Our salt and pepper shakers belonged to Steve's great great grandmother, Izorah Smith. I don't know how old they are, but she died in 1961. After she passed away, they went to Grandma Moore. When she sold her house a couple of years ago, we got them. I can imagine all of the many meals these shakers have seasoned and the many family get togethers they have witnessed. We have a few antiques that we've gotten from Grandma Moore that have been in the family for many years. I love them:)

Grandma Moore's dress

When Steve's Grandma was selling her house and getting rid of things, one of the things she gave to us was an old black trunk that belonged to Steve's great uncle. Inside it were some baby clothes that were Grandma Moore's, Rebecca's great grandma.

Since Rebecca is not in her harness all day now, I put one of them on her yesterday, and I like the pictures. The dress was a pretty good fit, so it's a good thing I did this now instead of waiting much longer! It's still big enough that it was really easy to get on and off. It's showing it's age, so I wanted to be really careful. I love the hat!
