Rebecca's birthday party

It's better late than never I guess, but here's some pictures of Rebecca's birthday party. It was lot of fun! We had a water game and some water balloons and other typical birthday stuff. Most of the food was centered around the Strawberry Shortcake theme. We had Blueberry Muffins, Plum Pudding (which was actually blueberry, but it looked kind of purply), Custard (yogurt), Raspberry Tart sandwiches (pb & raspberry jelly), lemon bars, Orange Blossom punch, Lem n Ada, Tea n Honey, and of course Strawberry Shortcake. :)

I used mostly things I had on hand, and gave Rebecca a couple of vintage Strawberry Shortcake books to display on the tables. We hung vintage sheets from the deck, 2 of the 3 sheets have sold on ebay now. I don't have a picture of the goody table, but that's it on the right side of the picture below. I found a Strawberry Shortcake lamp at a yard sale for .25 cents! So of course I had to have that for the party and put it on the goody table.

This was the drink table. I found these curtains at a flea market and used them as a table cloth. I already sold them on ebay and got a little more than what I paid, so I was happy.

The strawberry shortcake desert was in little jars. I got a vintage Strawberry Shortcake lunch box at a flea market that I'm selling on ebay now, and I should get at least what I payed for it. I found the strawberry sheet at a thrift store, and I just sold it on ebay.


Here you can see the tissue paper poms I made. I used tissue paper from a church baby shower and some my sister gave me. And I really like how the ruffled streamers looked. They were so cheap and easy to do! My sewing machine hasn't worked right in a while, and it could even handle them.

Naomi made the cake. She said it was melted because it was soooo hot. But a melted cake by Naomi is better than any cake I would make.


This was a fun game the kids played. Each team had a bucket to fill up with water using their bottle thingy I made. I cut the tops off of 2 two liter bottles and put holes in them.




Then there were water balloons. Joy filled about 60 water balloons for me, and my friend Nancy offered to bring some too. Nancy arrived with 200 water balloons! Nancy's stayed outside and stayed warm, but Joy's were in our basement until we were ready for them. Joy's were cooooold! But it was a lot of fun!

Rebecca's 2nd birthday

We had a family day on Rebecca's birthday. We went to the Capitol for a little while, then to Playtime Pizza for pizza & games, then the mall where Rebecca got new Dora shoes. She fell asleep in the car so we stopped at the thrift store while she snoozed. Then I fell asleep in the car. Fun day :)

Recent happenings

Here's a few pictures to catch things up from the last couple of weeks. Gizmo was sprayed by a skunk Friday night. He spent the night in the garage until I came back Saturday with peroxide for his cool dip. We've lived in a rural area for two years with two cats. I guess we were due.


Rebecca loves looking at her books. I think she would be happy with a room full of books and no other toys. That doesn't keep her from taking out all of her other toys though.

Usually it's Justin and Jackson that eat at this table. Rebecca ate a snack at this table for the first time last week. She thought she was so big. Now she just likes to sit there just because. :)

Rebecca had her first lollipop, and first candy that I know of. She probably has candy at someone else's house. Granny is the one who would know about that. It was a tootsie pop, and she only had a few licks. She did not get to the tootsie roll center, I did. :)

Just being silly. . .

We had an over the hill party for Steve Friday night. His birthday was October 30th, but that was the weekend before the election, so we waited for things to settle down to have a party.

Uncle Davey and Aunt Naomi came over. Rebecca loves to sit in a lap and look at books.

The car on the cake is actually a 1970 car, for the year Steve was born. Naomi made another great cake!

Sunday night there was a reception after church to celebrate Steve's winning the election. Here he is giving his little speech.

Strawberry Shortcake dress

I was looking through things for some pictures last week, and I came across this old dress. I'm sure my sister wore this, and I may have worn it. I had already decided I wanted to have a Strawberry Shortcake birthday party for Rebecca next summer. I like to plan ahead so I can bee looking at yard sales for thrifty decorations. This dress should fit her just about right.

Another cake

Rebecca's birthday was on Wednesday, so we had a little birthday celebration at church after the service with our church family. I really like this picture. :)

Turning One

Here are a few of the birthday pictures. My sister Joy took a lot of these, and I haven't gotten all of hers yet. But these are the highlights.

Aunt Kelly made Rebecca a super cute tutu. She looked like a princess.

Party decorations

The birthday party went really well. We had a packed house, but it was a lot of fun. And almost everyone in Steve's family was together for the first time in a long long time.

Naomi made a great looking (and great tasting) cake. I made cupcakes, and Naomi came early to decorate them.


I didn't want to buy a lot of decorations for Rebecca's party. I bought balloons, and I spent $1 on the cupcake banner hanging over the high chair. I made everything else with supplies I had at home.

I used scrapbook papers and supplies to make the birthday banner.

The curly ribbon is a couple of gift bows from Rebecca's baby gifts. The paper rosettes were made from a story book I bought at a yard sale for .25 cents. I didn't like it and was just going to get rid of it. I had found instructions somewhere on the internet for paper rosettes, which I can't find now. They were pretty easy though. I tore out the pages, and folded them like a fan. I used the folded pages on most of mine and cut the ends to look a little more interesting.

I found a bunch of containers, cans, and jars I had around the house to use for chips, pretzels, forks, toothpicks, etc. I used a small mailbox decorated with green ribbon and a number "1" and put Rebecca's pictures in it for guests to take.

I bought this flag at a yard sale for .50 cents, and plan on using it again.

Another converted story book. This was really really easy. I just tore out the pages, which were perfect squares. Cut it in diagonals (four triangle pieces), folded one corner and stapled it, and used my hot glue gun to attach buttons and wooden dowels. I put them in a jar with some buttons and put it on the table as a centerpiece.

Now I start planning for next year. . .

Cupcake Bites

I kind of had a cupcake thing going for Rebecca's birthday party. So when I saw these Cupcake Bites on Bakerella's blog, I knew I wanted to make them. They turned out pretty good, I think. They really weren't hard to make. I used Betty Crocker chocolate cake mix, since that's what I had on hand, and Pillsbury cream cheese frosting. Bakerella likes cream cheese frosting. I decided not to put mine on sticks and just used paper cups. Bakerella uses a candy mold. I don't have one, but I had little paper cups and used those instead. The most time consuming part was putting the sprinkles on. They took some time, but I think it was worth it. They were really yummy, and soooo cute! And really yummy. They were a big hit at the birthday party. Bakerella makes a lot of different kinds of cake bites and cake pops. Maybe I'll give another variety a try one day.

They're so adorable, I almost can't stand it. :)


I'm still loading and editing birthday pictures to be posted in the next few days. We're all pretty tired from the events of the last week. But it's just us in our house now, getting things back to normal. It's so quiet. I miss everyone already.
